Learn gold trading: a precise, risk-first toolkit

Gold trading with a CFD gives you exposure to the XAU/USD price without owning metal, and the discipline that separates a plan from a gamble is position sizing and cost awareness. This hub walks you through the contract, leverage and margin, fixed-risk sizing, the real cost of holding a position, stop placement, and the mistakes that catch new gold traders in South Africa.

FAQ

Common questions

Where should a complete beginner start with gold trading?

Start with the contract, not the chart. Learn that XAU/USD is quoted in US dollars per ounce, that one standard lot is 100 oz, and that one pip is 0.01. Then practise position sizing on paper using our position size and pip value calculators before you risk any rand.

Do I need a big account to trade gold?

You need enough margin and enough room for the price to move against you, and that depends on your lot size and leverage. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, but margin is not the same as risk. Size from the rand amount you are willing to lose, not from the smallest deposit you can open with.

What is the difference between pips and points on gold?

On XAU/USD, one pip is 0.01, so a move from 4275.00 to 4275.10 is one pip. Some platforms display prices with two decimals and call the second decimal a point, which can confuse beginners reading a chart. Confirm how your platform labels the last digit before you calculate pip value.

How much leverage should a beginner use on gold?

Use far less than the maximum. Leverage in South Africa runs up to 1:200 for retail and up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients depending on instrument, but that is a cap, not a target. Gold moves in large dollar swings, so a smaller effective size keeps a normal week from turning into a margin call.

Which order type should I learn first?

Learn the stop-loss before anything else. A stop-loss defines the most you can lose on a trade and makes position sizing possible, because you size from the distance to that stop. Market, limit and stop-entry orders matter next, but none of them protect you without a stop attached to the plan.
